Concluding the second of four residencies in our 2026–27 Residency Program, Cool Change is excited to present an open studio with Annie Huang and Reegan Jackson, featuring an artist talk facilitated by David Friedrich—sound and media artist, musician, composer, and techno-philosopher.

Drawing from their combined interests in the collective experience of language and technology, Annie Huang and Reegan Jackson are using their residency to explore the audio aspect of internet memes as a shared cultural language, shaped by repetition, compression, and platform logic. Detached from their origin, authorship, and context, the sounds operate as cultural signifiers that are endlessly repeated, revoiced, remixed, and distributed.

With a focus on short, highly circulated fragments, catchphrases, remixed speech, vocal tics, and algorithmically amplified sounds, the duo have been using algorithms to extract data from the audio of trending memes. Where ears interpret vibrations moving through a medium, such as air, to create pressure waves as sound, computers capture these waves as rapid snapshots called samples: a stream of data points that recreates the waveform of a recorded sound.

Extrapolating this data into digital models, Annie and Reegan have been working to transform these artefacts into physical sculptures through 3D printing, mould-making, and casting. In translating these ephemeral forms into tangible objects, the project considers meme audio as a contemporary vernacular, creating an archive that speaks to cultural expression, social connection, and shared experience.
