The Blak Dingo Club is a Whadjuk-led community of politically and historically conscious individuals committed to truth-telling our shared histories and celebrating blakfulla excellence, initiated by Cool Change’s current artist-in-residence, Bibbulmun Noongar and Kungarakan artist Ilona McGuire, who writes:

“The Blak Dingo Club is a cause for celebration and joy, something we have been lacking in the world as of late. The sting of large scale rejection following the 2023 national referendum has been life changing for ATSI (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Peoples and our allies. I feel deeply that the need for joy and togetherness is more important than ever as we move forward.

The Blak Dingo Club is a symbol of that. A community who engage in honest conversation, who are aware of social, historical, and political contexts of our individual presences here on these unceded lands and waters. And with this awareness, choose to come together and be mindfully joyous, with time and space for love and laughter. Something to be excited about in a world full of grief and despair, this is an offering for my Mob and our beloved friends.”

Inspired by socially and politically engaged projects such as the Coolbaroo League, the Black Panther Party, Lorraine Coppin’s Yellow Bus, and the 1965 Freedom Ride, amongst others, the Blak Dingo Club will present a schedule of events, including heritage walking tours, movie nights, a quiz night, a reading group, and a launch party.
